Top Tips for a Stress-Free First Dental Visit

We know a child’s first dental visit can feel like a big step — for both kids and parents! At Babbie Dental, our calm and soothing environment is designed to help your little one feel safe, relaxed, and even excited to visit the dentist.

Here are our top tips to help ensure a smooth, stress-free first appointment:

  1. Talk About It Positively
When talking about the dentist, use positive, child-friendly language. Steer clear of words like ‘hurt’ or ‘shot’ — try saying something like, ‘The dentist is going to count your teeth!’. These little changes can make a big difference.
  2. Schedule Smart
Our office will work with you to book your appointment at a time when your child is feeling their best! This is usually when everyone is feeling well-rested and fed — mornings often work best for little ones.
  3. Meet Mr. Sharkey!
Our friendly helper, Mr. Sharkey, is always ready to show kids how easy and fun it is to brush teeth. Many children love brushing his teeth before we take a look at theirs — it helps them feel confident and in control.
  4. Bring a Comfort Item
Whether it’s a favorite stuffed animal, toy, or even a special blanket — having something familiar can make all the difference. Some children also prefer to bring their own toothpaste, especially if they’re sensitive to flavors or textures — and we welcome that!
  5. Parents Are Part of the Team
We know dental visits can feel just as stressful for parents. That’s why we always welcome parents during appointments. You know your child best — and your presence can help your little one feel safe and supported. Together, we’ll choose the best approach for your child.
  6. Ask About Desensitization Visits
Some kids just need a little extra time to warm up — and that’s okay! Our desensitization appointments are short, low-pressure visits that allow your child to get familiar with our team, the space, and the tools we use, all at their own pace. These visits help build confidence and comfort step by step.

We’re honored to be part of your child’s dental journey — and we’re committed to helping them start it with confidence!
